Calendar of Events

The LWV requires a camera or verbal check-in at the start of all of its online meetings. We do this to create a welcoming and open environment where we can hold each other accountable. Individuals unwilling to check-in will be removed from the  meeting. To create a space for open and honest discussion, the League also prohibits attendees from recording meetings via AI Otterbox or other recording systems. Should you require a meeting transcript for accessibility accommodation, please contact info@lwvky.org in advance to discuss options.

DFAD: Democracy Summer: Messaging Training

Declaration for American Democracy: In the 118th Congress (2023-2024), both the Freedom to Vote Act and John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act once again received an enthusiastic re-introduction in the House and Senate with Democratic Leadership in both chambers declaring pro-democracy legislation a top priority as well as support from the White House. Unfortunately, these bills are at a stand still this session, but we can gear ourselves up for what's next.

The DFAD Coalition invites you to a training series this summer to be a part of the strong and prepared movement to pass the Freedom to Vote Act in the next Congress. Join us for our 4 part series to ensure we're ready to fight for Democracy on Day 1!

Our second training will be on messaging and getting out our pro-democracy message out there. Join us 4pm PT/7pm ET on July 30th with our expert trainers from ReThink Media!

VOCAL-KY: Kentucky Organizing Revival

VOCAL-KY has a 120 county focus even while based in Louisville, Kentucky. Our members, leaders, staff and supporters realize that we need more community organizing in all of our rural, urban and suburban neighborhoods from the hood to the hollers. Kentuckians are struggling with low wages, inadequate housing, climate change disasters, voter restoration, homelessness, equal educational opportunities, health disparities, and a failed drug war.

We must organize to build people power that leads to better policies that help all Kentuckians survive and thrive no matter what zip code they live in. Please join our local and national partners, including People's Action for logistics and planning. We want groups doing work in Kentucky to sign up to table and to help us meet our goal of 200 organizers, base building organizations, and future organizers to Winchester, Kentucky June 7-9, 2024.

NOTE that times listed (9 AM-5 PM) are placeholders until actual times are announced.

Book Launch with Josh Douglas: "The Court v. The Voters: The Troubling Story of How the Supreme Court Has Undermined Voting Rights"

Join the League of Women Voters at the book launch for Professor Josh Douglas’ new book, The Court v. The Voters: The Troubling Story of How the Supreme Court Has Undermined Voting Rights on May 14 at 7 PM at Pivot Brewing (1400 Delaware St, Lexington, KY) at 7PM ET.

Professor Joshua A. Douglas teaches and researches election law and voting rights, civil procedure, constitutional law, and judicial decision making at the University of Kentucky J. David Rosenberg College of Law. He is the author of Vote for US: How to Take Back our Elections and Change the Future of Voting, a popular press book that provides hope and inspiration for a positive path forward on voting rights. His next popular press book, The Court v. The Voters: The Troubling Story of How the Supreme Court Has Undermined Voting Rights, will be published in 2024.

An urgent and gripping look at the erosion of voting rights and its implications for democracy, told through the stories of 9 Supreme Court decisions—and the next looming case

In The Court v. The Voters, law professor Joshua Douglas takes us behind the scenes of significant cases in voting rights—some surprising and unknown, some familiar—to investigate the historic crossroads that have irrevocably changed our elections and the nation. In crisp and accessible prose, Douglas tells the story of each case, sheds light on the intractable election problems we face as a result, and highlights the unique role the highest court has played in producing a broken electoral system.

Douglas charts infamous cases like:

  • Bush v. Gore, which opened the door to many election law claims

  • Citizens United, which contributed to skewed representation—but perhaps not in the way you might think

  • Shelby County v. Holder, which gutted the vital protections of the Voting Rights Act

  • Crawford v. Marion County Elections Board, which allowed states to enforce voter ID laws and make it harder for people to vote

The Court v. The Voters powerfully reminds us of the tangible, real-world effects from the Court’s voting rights decisions. While we can—and should—lament the democracy that might have been, Douglas argues that we can—and should—double down in our efforts to protect the right to vote.

Join the LWV of KY for an Open Primary Webinar on Thursday, February 29th from 6:00 - 7:00 PM with University of Kentucky Law Professor, Josh Douglas, and former Kentucky Secretary of State, Trey Grayson.

They will be discussing the pros and cons of Kentucky keeping our current closed primary system or adopting a more open format that would increase the number of eligible primary voters.  Kentucky League members will be invited to participate in March consensus/discussion meetings to determine if we want to keep our current system or advocate for changes.  Professor Douglas and Secretary Grayson will be giving us necessary information for productive discussions at our local March meetings, perhaps leading to member consensus and action regarding how Kentucky chooses its candidates for the General Election.
